Effects of Natural Type (S) - (+) - Abscisic Acid on Anthocyanin Accumulation and Maturity in ¢¥ Kyoho ¢¥ Grapes

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate effects of natural type ABA [S-ABA, (s)-(+)-abscisic acid] treatments on color development and fruit quality in ¢¥Kyoho¢¥ grapes grown in plastic houses or open field where environmental and/or cultural conditions were inadequate for berry coloration. Skin coloration was significantly improved regardless of vine growing conditions, open field or plastic houses when ABA was applied at the stage of approximately 10% of a cluster were colored. However, the effect of S-ABA on anthocyanin accumulation was greatly reduced on berries containing less than 10% of soluble solids. Also, the addition of surfactant apparently improved the ABA effect. ABA shortened ripening stage 3 to 4 weeks at the concentration of 250 and 500 §·¡¤L^(-1), respectively in unfavorable orchard for color development such as high temperature at ripening, excess fruiting, and close spacing of grapevines. However, berry softening, and the levels of soluble solids and acididity were not affected at maturity by ABA. Results indicated that S-ABA was highly effective on anthocyanin accumulation of ¢¥Kyoho¢¥ grape fruits without adverse effect of fruit quality.
